Slip and falls a concern for health officials as winter weather hits Siouxland | Bot To News

SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – With another winter storm headed for Siouxland, it’s important to know how to stay warm and safe.

The number of slips and falls increases when there is ice and snow.

Therefore, officials say it is important to dress appropriately for the weather.

Wearing gloves helps keep your hands warm and keeps them out of your pockets.

That frees up your hands and arms, which improves your ability to stay upright in icy conditions.

”Make sure you wear gloves, that way your arms are free to help you balance, you’re not putting your hands in your pockets. If you have to carry something, try using a backpack or shoulder bag or something once again to keep your hands free. Your arms are one of your best tools for balance, especially in icy conditions,” said Amanda Monroe-Rubendall, clinical educator at MercyOne Siouxland Medical Center.

Weather conditions can change from day to day. Therefore, it is important to be aware of your surroundings. That way you can see if the melted snow has frozen. Patience is key to avoiding a fall this winter.

“The snow that we had last week has also melted a lot, so it is very important that people take their time when they go for a walk. Even if we have a day where it’s hot and it melts in shady areas or as night falls, progress can get slippery again,” Monroe-Rubendall said.

Officials also say that if you don’t need to go out in inclement weather, you should stay home. Also, be sure to take your cell phone with you in case there is an accident. That way you can ask for help.
