Sports will be front and center at The Row Sports Bar and Grill on the downtown Bowling Green, with an impressive food menu and a full selection of beer and mixed cocktails.

Owners Matthew Boca and Michael “Wally” Wahle named the bar Rollin’ On Wooster, or The Row. The name is the creative genius of co-owner Wall, who, when asked if he would keep the Reverends name, replied, “No, I’m getting off of it.”

The bar has a sailing theme to align with the name. Paddles hang on the walls, and the 25 employees wear shirts labeled “Team” rather than “Employee,” Boca explained.

The interior required very little renovations to make the bar ready for business. The exposed brick walls that covered the former bar space continue to provide a welcoming and comfortable space for food, drinks and camaraderie. And watching sports. A total of 14 televisions have been added throughout the venue to ensure everyone can watch the screen wherever they sit.

“It’s kind of a game all the time,” Boca said. During football season, crowd NFL favorites — the Browns, Lions and Steelers — are usually shown on the screens. “But we try to keep up with what’s going on, and like when the US men’s soccer team played the Netherlands at the World Club, we opened early and welcomed soccer fans,” he added.

They also added a window inside to order food and removed a set of cabinets to open up the space. “We want to make this a place where everyone feels comfortable and welcome,” said Boca, who grew up in Swanton and worked in the service industry for 18 years before moving to Bowling Green in 2008.

“We had some of the Reverend’s favorites: the rapture dip that’s still here and the buffalo chicken tacos. But we changed the menu a bit by adding my favorite menu item, Smashburgers,” he said

said. Instead of serving one seven-ounce hamburger patty, the Smashburger features two four-ounce patties that “smash” together when they hit the grill to keep the burgers juicy. Two slices of cheese up to the cheese factor.

The drink menu features a variety of craft cocktails, including fresh fruit cocktails like the Strawberry-Basil Moscow Mule and plenty of good craft beers. To support local small businesses, they try to brew beers from BG-based Juniper Brewing Company and Five Brewing Company, which has locations in Sylvania and Perrysburg.

“We try to have some interesting and local brews available,” Poca said.

Monday to Friday 3pm to 2am and Saturday and Sunday 2pm to 2am.

The kitchen is open at midnight Monday through Thursday, 1 a.m. Friday and Saturday, and 10 p.m. Sunday when the business closes.

Although the sports bar opened in September to celebrate Bowling Green State University’s 100th homecoming, the city will officially welcome back the sports bar at a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday at 4 p.m. Mayor Mike Asbacher and PG Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mary Hinkelman will provide remarks and help cut the ribbon.
