In the early days of 2022, shoppers emerged from two long years of dressing in pandemic-approved athletic and cozy clothing. But as the year unfolded, Nordstrom saw customers trade in sweats for smart tailoring, ditching leggings in favor of colorful ensembles, mod details and comfortable yet unpretentious footwear. It was official: the occasion dress was back in full effect.

The department store retailer has rounded up some of the year’s top trends based on its customers’ behavior as a look back at how 2022’s fashion fared.

Dopamine dressing

Professor Karen Pine from the University of Hertfordshire conducted a study which found that what women choose to wear is highly dependent on their emotional state. When he investigated this in 2012, he found that participants who wore clothing of symbolic value to them, their perceived confidence increased. Thus, the theory of “dopamine dressing” was born, coined by fashion psychologist Dr. Dawn Karen.

“This finding shows that clothing not only influences others, but also reflects and influences the wearer’s state of mind,” Pine said. “Many of the women in this study felt they could alter their mood by changing what they wore. This demonstrates the psychological power of clothing and how the right choices can influence a person’s happiness.”

The study found that “happy” clothes, those that made women feel good, were well-cut, figure-enhancing and made from brightly colored fabrics. In essence, the anthesis of jeans. Shoppers at Nordstrom were drawn to women’s footwear with details to match in true colors inspired by “Bridgerton” and Y2K, with brands like Mach & Mach, Prada, Loewe and Miu Miu offering new and fresh.

Bright and bold

Bright, eye-catching pieces in vibrant hues were seen everywhere, a clear shift towards embracing cheerful color, whether it was a bright blazer or a megawatt monochromatic look. The same can be said for accessories; jewelry, belts, bags and other accessories to complete the outfit have been one of the most prominent trends that Nordstrom has seen this year, and it looks like it will continue.

Smart tailoring

The pandemic-induced rise in casual and comfortable clothing still persists. So it’s no surprise that the retailer has seen tailoring take on a softer, looser silhouette, adding a sense of ease as people head back to the office.

Nordstrom noted that the novelty customers were looking for was polished, but not entirely buttoned up. Loafers, ballet flats and even loafers have replaced the old office pump.

A nod to 60s mod

Like all good trends, ’60s style has come full circle. From tweed textures, well-tailored mini hems and sleek color palettes to full mod details, the ’60s were all about high hems and structured shapes.

You shop sustainably

Nordstrom said its customers are enjoying a moment of appreciation for investment pieces that will be in their wardrobes for years to come. Smart buys that stand the test of time through their modern yet timeless design have made customers feel good about shopping high as a more sustainable option (considering their longer shelf life).

The retailer continued to expand its offerings under Sustainable Style, a shoppable category to help customers find responsibly manufactured products made from sustainably sourced materials and part of a return program. This year, Nordstrom added brands with products that meet the requirements for sustainable style, including Allbirds and Pangaia.
